This last year has shown us—more than ever before—why we all need a bucket list. In 2020, vacations were cancelled, families and friends were unable to visit one another, and weddings and other social events were postponed. But, more than anything else, the pandemic proved that we need togetherness and adventure in our lives, and we need it now! That's why creating a bucket list is so important. A bucket list is a long-term plan about the places you want to visit…not just for your next trip but for your next 10 trips!
Everyone's bucket list is unique. It should include all the places and experiences you've ever dreamt of. It should never include places you think you should visit because everyone else has been there. If these places are on your list, it's likely you'll miss out on places and experiences that are important to YOU.
You don't have to limit yourself to just one list. In fact, it's a good idea to have several themed bucket lists which can be shared with people you like to travel with. For example, you might have a list of things you want to do with family, a list of places you want to go with your travel buddies, a romantic bucket list for travel with your significant other, and even a list of places where you want to celebrate milestone birthdays, anniversaries, or other special occasions.
Here are some ideas for bucket list themes:
Family bucket list
Adventure bucket list
Romance bucket list
Friends bucket list
Short-term (this year) bucket list
Long-term or special-term bucket list (Tip: Make sure you set a specific year or date for each one.)
Milestones bucket list
Here are some questions to help you get started: What did you always dream of doing as a child? Where have you always dreamt of traveling? What craft or activity did you always want to take up? What physical activities have you always wanted to try? What sort of events have you always wanted to attend?
Bucket lists should never be “one day or someday.” The purpose of a bucket list is to make you accountable for doing amazing things and visiting incredible places. Share your lists with the people important to you. This encourages conversations about them and helps prevent a bucket list from becoming an “it’s never going to happen” list.
